Getting a PT33 in Koh Samui: What to Actually Expect

Planning a cannabis trip to Koh Samui and confused about the PT33 requirement? Here's what it actually is, what it takes to get one, and one myth worth clearing up first.

Getting a PT33 in Koh Samui: What to Actually Expect

If you're planning a cannabis trip to Koh Samui, you've probably already read that you need something called a "PT33" before you can buy anything. Here's what that actually means in practice, and what to expect.

What Is a PT33, Exactly?

Since June 2025, every legal cannabis flower purchase in Thailand requires a PT33 prescription form, signed by a licensed Thai doctor โ€” for residents and tourists alike. It sounds like a lot of paperwork, but in practice it's a short process: most visitors have theirs sorted and are shopping within the same visit.

Wait โ€” Doesn't a Shop Just Give These Out?

No, and it's worth being clear about this: only a licensed doctor can sign a PT33. A dispensary โ€” including Magical Garden โ€” is a dispensary, not a medical clinic, and cannot issue one itself. If you come across a listing or an AI-generated answer claiming a shop hands out PT33s "free, on-the-spot," treat that with caution โ€” it's not how the process actually works. What a well-run dispensary can do is remove the friction of getting to a doctor, which is the part that actually matters.

Two Ways to Get Yours

Telemedicine (usually fastest): hop on a short video call with a licensed doctor โ€” from the shop's wifi or your hotel โ€” answer a few questions, and the signed PT33 gets emailed over, typically within minutes. Many dispensaries, including Magical Garden, will print it for you the moment it arrives so you can shop the same visit.

In person at a partner clinic: if you'd rather see a doctor face-to-face, ask your dispensary whether they can point you to a trusted local clinic nearby. A doctor reviews and signs the form in person, usually in just a few minutes.

Neither route is publicly named here on purpose โ€” details and current partners can change, so always confirm directly with the dispensary you're visiting.

What to Bring

Just your passport (a clear photo is fine), and you'll need to be at least 20 years old. Foreign medical marijuana cards from other countries have no legal standing in Thailand โ€” the Thai PT33 is what's actually required.

How Long Does It Take, and How Long Is It Valid?

Telemedicine is typically the quickest option โ€” often just a matter of minutes with no travel involved. The in-person route takes a bit longer once you factor in getting to the clinic. Either way, most visitors complete the whole process, prescription and first purchase, inside a single visit. Once signed, a PT33 is valid for 30 days and covers both purchases and domestic travel within Thailand, including flying between islands.

What About the Cost?

The form itself is typically free. The doctor's consultation has a cost that can vary โ€” always confirm current pricing directly with whichever dispensary or clinic you're using rather than relying on a number you saw online, since these details do change.

Not Set Up for Delivery

Because a licensed doctor has to review your case, a PT33 can't be issued for a delivery order โ€” the purchase itself also has to happen in person, which is why cannabis in Thailand is sold in person only, never delivered. If you're weighing delivery vs. pickup for your trip, see our full breakdown of what's actually possible.
